Class 8: Making Biological Batteries pack – Build Biological Batteries and connect them to test data

Lesson Summary

​

     In this lesson students will lean and hands on to make  biological batteries pack and a circuit include LED and their self-made biological battery. They will follow the instruction on each step and examined by teacher and self-examine with each other to ensure each step is correct and well done.  Students will make a battery pack out of the 3 batteries they made in the previous class. Then students will connect the battery pack with a LED light in the right direction and correctly connect with their self-made biological battery pack. The teacher will examine it to make see if the students are making the correct connections.  Then students will turn the switch on to see if their self-made biological battery and battery pack light up the LED light. Students will use multimeter to record  the light up voltage and current. Students need to trouble shooting if their LED light is not light up by their batteries . In the process, students will learn to gain real world engineering experience and learn to identify and solve the real power problem. s

  1. How does the voltage and current of the biological battery pack change after adding the biological solution till it lights up the LED?

  2. If the LED light does not light up, what could be the issues? What can you do to fix it?

Learning Objectives:

  Students will be able to...

  • Assemble the batteries, connect multiple batteries together to make a battery pack, and  add the biological solution. 

  • Connect a circuit with the biological battery and LED light then record the data.

  • Test, analyze, and record all data for the voltage change of each battery until they reach the targeted levels.

  • Understand basic problem diagnosis and troubleshooting skill practices.

  • Inspect, troubleshoot, and diagnose the battery pack to identify potential problems in the circuit that prevent the target power levels from being reached. 

  • Explore diverse career pathways in engineering and clean technology to drive innovation with an engineering mindset. 

  • Emphasis the importance of material preparation and project execution.

  • Identify the difference between chemical batteries and biological batteries, and the key components that determine the performance of the battery.

  • Demonstrate introductory knowledge and skills on electrical engineering.

  • Interpret common errors and prevent the problems when making biological batteries.
